RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

)Regulation of myocardial Na,K-ATPase expression and function by thyroid hormone. It has been known for many years that treatment of hypothyroid mammals with T3 results in a stimulation of Na,K-ATPase activity in the heart and other target tissues. This project examines the role of transcriptional and post transcriptional mechanisms in the induction of Na,K-ATPase subunit mRNAs by T3.

)Regulation of Glut1 glucose transporter expression and function in response to hypoxia. Studies are focused on mechanisms underlying both acute and chronic phases of the response to the hypoxic stimulus.

)ACCORD and BARI-2D clinical trials focused on the control of cardiovascular risk in patients with type 2 diabetes.

)Islet cell biology and the control of insulin secretion.
