Neonatal Developmental Respiratory Neurobiology Laboratory

RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

Dr. Martin is a leader in the field of neonatal respiratory problems, focusing on developmental pulmonology, control of breathing, and airway maturation in neonates. He has focused much of his attention on the biologic basis for apnea of prematurity and its management, employing state-of-the-art biologic tools, and clinical trials for new ventilatory and pharmacologic clinical strategies. He has also focused on the development of airway function in health and disease, and the roles of lung and airway injury in the development of later respiratory morbidities such as wheezing disorders in children born prematurely. He has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health for over 20 years.

Research interests also include nitric oxide activity as it pertains to lung injury and its use in modulating airway contraction.
