RATIONALE

The recruitment and the granting of secondary appointments to CWRU colleagues plays a key role in the educational and scientific development of the departments at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine (CWRU). Through these appointments, the departments seek to expand and broaden their teaching and research mission in areas pertinent to the discipline and the research emphasis of the department. In addition to enhancing academic activities of the department, these appointments also provide advantages to other departments, research centers and institutions such as the use of facilities and equipment, access to graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, teaching experiences, etc.

These appointments, however, should be granted judiciously such that they are for the mutual benefit of both the department and the recipients. Consequently, the following guidelines are established for the appointment and reappointment of secondary faculty, effective July 1, 2001.

GUIDELINES

These following guidelines apply specifically to appointment and reappointment at the departmental level. All candidates must meet the criteria as set forth in the School of Medicine's document entitled 'Standards for Appointment, Promotion and Tenure.'

Secondary appointments are reserved for CWRU faculty who hold a primary appointment in another department at the University, but who want to formalize their interaction with another department in the School. The rank of the secondary appointment in the second department shall usually be the same rank of the faculty member in his or her home department. Initially appointments in the second department are for a period of two years, renewable subject to full review by the Department's Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure. In no case shall the term of appointment extend beyond the terminating date of the existing primary appointment in the home department. A maximum of two secondary appointments, in addition to the primary appointment, is the rule. This could be waived by the Dean under exceptional circumstances.

To be eligible for secondary appointment, faculty must be making significant contributions to the department through teaching and/or scientific collaboration, or, for a new appointment, have detailed plans for doing so.

To be considered for secondary appointment, the candidate should submit the following to the department chair: 1) a letter requesting consideration for a secondary appointment; 2) an updated C.V..; 3) a letter of concurrence from the home department chairman supporting such a request; 4) a description of his/her previous interaction with the full-time faculty of the department where secondary appointment is offered, its educational programs, and/or future plans for scientific-educational interactions; 5) a few paragraphs outlining the highlight's of the individual's scientific and academic achievements; 6) a list of present extramural support; 7) three copies of recent and important manuscripts; and 8) five names to be used as references.

Formal evaluation of the candidate will be based not only on scientific and educational merit, but also on the actual or proposed interaction of the individual within the teaching and research activities of the department.

Examples of such interaction are:

  • Capability and willingness to contribute to the educational programs of this department (medical school teaching, graduate and undergraduate programs, retreats, continuing education, etc.) and participation in formulating and revising curricula and programs;
  • Evidence of effective research interaction with members of the faculty of the department as evidenced by co-authorship in scientific papers, participation in grants and contracts, participation in program projects or training grants, sharing of major equipment of facilities;
  • Active participation in the cultural and scientific activities of the department seminars, symposia, retreats, etc.), and in departmental committee work, recruitment of faculty and students, etc.

Secondary appointees serve on the various committees of the department, participate in its educational programs and are eligible to serve as thesis advisors to our doctoral students. In order to serve as a thesis advisor, secondary faculty must have an independent laboratory and active research programs which are funded extramurally.
