RECKNAGEL SYMPOSIUM

Professor Richard Recknagel was Chairman of Physiology from 1976 to 1986. He was an admired thinker and investigator who took a keen interest in mentoring young students and faculty. In his memory, the department established an annual research symposium - the Richard Recknagel Symposium.

During the first year of graduate training, all students in the Physiology and Biophysics Department rotate in three different laboratories. The goal of these rotations is to identify a subject area of interest and a mentor for future research. After completion of their research rotations, first year students participate as presenters in the Richard Recknagel Symposium. This symposium offers an opportunity for these graduate students to present a formal seminar describing their successes during the first year exploratory rotations. This is a celebrated event that provides an ideal opportunity for these students to share their experiences and research accomplishments to the entire department.
