POST DOCTORAL FELLOWS
Post-Docs are an essential component of our training and research environment. Currently, about 35 Post-Doctoral Fellows (link to Listing) , many of whom are from foreign countries, add to the interdisciplinary, research, and cultural diversity in our department. Generally, post-doctoral researchers are supported by fellowships, or by research and training grants available in the department and the faculty advisors laboratories. POST DOCTORAL TRAINING PROGRAM
The Case Medical School including our department realize the crucial importance of the post-doctoral research period in the education towards an academic or industrial research career. To further strengthen the research education we devised a training program specifically aimed at enhancing the training experience beyond the lab boundaries. POST DOCTORAL FELLOWS AT CASE
Case SOM, like other institutions, has defined the postdoctoral positions as a training period for a career in biomedical science: "A postdoctoral trainee is a person who has recently earned a Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, and who joins Case Western Reserve University to perform mentored research full-time under the supervision of a member of the faculty. The position can be held for up to five years and is meant to provide additional research and/or scholarly training in preparation for a position in academe, industry, or government." The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs provides employment related activities such as appointment letters for postdoctoral trainees.
POST DOCTORAL MENTORING AT CASE SOM
The Office of Graduate Education at the School of Medicine administers the Postdoctoral Mentoring Program. This program offers a series of mentoring events to address career development. It is open to postdoctoral trainees throughout the SOM and meets once a month, with lunch provided. Past topics have included grant-writing skills, setting up a research laboratory, intellectual property, and issues concerning foreign scientists working in US labs.
The Office of Research and Technology Management organizes monthly meetings and workshops open to all researchers on critical issues in the practice of science, including authorship, compliance with IRB/IACUC, conflict of interest and technology transfer. Click here to see their calendar of events.
