RESEARCH
With over 50 faculty, over half of whom hold primary appointments, the Department of Physiology and Biophysics ranks 9th (in funding) out of approximately 125 Departments of Physiology and Biophysics in the U.S. The large number of faculty and students, along with the high level of peer-review extramural research support in excess of $12 million, make this one of the largest and most active programs of physiology in the U.S. and abroad.
The members of this department share a common interest in understanding how biological systems operate, spanning from the level of the molecule to the cell to the whole animal. Within this mechanistic framework, specific areas of research are in cardiovascular, cardiopulmonary, neuronal, musculoskeletal, kidney/liver/gastrointestinal and endocrine systems under both physiological and pathological conditions. These areas are investigated using a variety of approaches that include biochemical, biophysical, cell biological, electrophysiological, and molecular biological methods.
